Magecraft, or thaumaturgy, is nothing more than the reenactment of a miracle. This can be defined as what can be scientifically realized. Overtime the limits altered. Originally close to True Magic, magecraft even in the Age of Gods is inferior, but in today’s time such magecraft would seem like Sorcery. Another way to explain magecraft to magic is one is “fake” and the other “real”. The World/Gaia/The Counter Force will try to crush the “fake” due to it being “unnatural” while magic is “natural”.
Thaumaturgy is the general term used to refer to several modern schools of magecraft. These are: astrology, Kabbalah, alchemy, Shinsendou, etc. Others exist but the fundamental rule is to “transform mana inside the users body to transform the external world”. Each school engraves their system of Thaumaturgical Theory into the world and uses the rules of that system to operate their spells. The efficiency of a system depends on how disseminated it is (i.e. the more people believe and/or use it). It is not uncommon for a system to not work properly when used outside its place of origin.
One key thing to remember is the Law of Equivalent Exchange(Yes I‘m quoting FMA). In order for something to be attained then something of equal value must be lost. A basis behind magecraft is to produce something that exists or can exist. When produced a price must be given. There are few who can bypass such rules, like Emiya Shirou.
Magic is defined as what magecraft and science can not achieve.

Facts:
- Everyone draws power from The Root. A predetermined amount of power exists within. The more people who draw from it the less people as individuals attain.
- The "only" way to achieve the level of True Magic is to enter The Root.
