A Magic Circuit is a pseudo-nervous system that is spread out through the soul. These circuits are what allow humans to perform magecraft. In one sense the circuits themselves reside in the soul and the physical expression is stretched through the body similar to the nervous system. One mistake often made is the circuits are actually apart of the body. Once damaged it is nearly impossible to repair. The affinity can be changed but not without serious measures. As for the number of circuits, they are determined at birth and can not increase naturally. There are artificial ways to change the numbers. One of which is circuit transfer from one magus to another or create artificial circuits. There is a possibility of rejection.
Ultimately, circuits are unnatural for the human body. This actively causes pain and numbness. The use of circuits raises bodily temperatures. Circuits are activated through use of a mental trigger once “opened”. For example; Tohsaka Rin imagines a knife stabbing her heart while Shirou imagines the firing the hammer of a gun. There are many other methods. Some of which may or may not be strange.
When it comes to circuits they can fall under a certain affinity. Such as: Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth (there is also Ether but it is the “raw” and “pure” form of the elements. Basic.). There are also the sub elements of each element.

While control over all elements is possible, it is extremely rare. On average a person is aligned with one element. It is uncommon to find someone with two and rare to find another with three. Four is nearly unheard. Specialized circuits also exist. At time a family, or person, might develop specialized circuits that is meant for “a certain type of magic”. These circuits house various effects depending on what element is used. Such as a fire specialized circuit might be capable of outputting 25 units in a single circuit!
The last thing to be covered is rather simple. How does one determine how much mana he/she has? You simply take the number of circuits and multiply them by how many units each circuit can handle. The “maximum output” is how much mana you have. The older the family the more circuits one might have, but this is not always the case. There are always those “special case” that come along once in every few generations.
Please refer to the Masteries Guide on how many circuits and how much output you may/may not have. No you do not have to follow it exactly. Mix and match how you please. Remember, the quantity does not outmatch the quality of the circuits.

- Fire is related to consumption, heat, entropy, fuels, energy transfer and thermodynamics. Sub-elements: Heat.
- Earth is related to grounding, cultivation of energy, and energy embedding. Sub-elements: Metal, jewels.
- Water is related to flows, forms, cycles, combinations and manipulations. Sub-elements: Ice
- Wind is related to air, kinetic forces, static energy, free energy and directed movement. Sub-elements: Lightning
- Ether is related to composition, dissolution, modification, separation, unification, spiritual bodies, etc. Sub-elements: Curse, Holy
